Bombay or Mumbai?
Whatever you want to call it, Mumbai is a city with a melting pot of cultures and lifestyles. It is paradox of glamour and squalor, modernity and tradition.
Bombay became Mumbai in 1995 when Shiv Sena came in power, and the party wanted to change the city's name to reflect the mratha heritage. Mumbai is named after the goddess of Mumbadevi, the city's patron deity.
Hollywood in India
Mumbai is the largest city in India, and is the home of the much-loved Bollywood film industry, and one of the most lively, colorful west eastern cities in India. This is a nation that celebrates tradition and history with a magnificent flair.
What to see in two days in Mumbai
The reason for choosing to travel to Mumbai was to go watch the CWC2023 India (Cricket World Cup) at Wankede Stadium. So we actually only had 1 full day to explore properly, and just under half a day to explore more, before heading off to cricket and then to Nashik thereafter (more about this wine region in another blog post soon).
- Sabyasachi
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is an Indian fashion designer, jewellery designer, retailer and couturier from Kolkata, India. In 2002 he got his debut in India Fashion Week.
In Mumbai we visited his flagship store, but it doesn't feel like a store, rather, it feels like a museum. There are chandeliers, carpets, books, works of art, and of course flamourous gowns. Opulence is what describes this magnificent store.
- Leipold Cafe
The Leopold Cafe and Bar is an iconic restaurant and bar on Colaba Causeway, in Colaba area of Mumbai.
We stopped for a quick bite and drink and I can confirm that the beers of ice cold!
- Colaba Causeway
Close to the Taj Hotel and Fort area, you will find a busy street shopping area where you can find a bargain, but be sure to haggle with the sellers to get a bargain.
Why not book an organised tour to see all the lovely sights around Mumbai?
There is so much more to see like the Elephanta Caves which is a short boat ride across from the Taj Palace
Where to stay in Mumbai
Taj Palace Hotel
Experience true grandeur at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, an iconic grand luxury hotel in Mumbai. We spent three glorious nights in a room overlooking the pool area. I could fault nothing, and it met my expectations.
Relax next to the pool or sip cocktails in the Harbour Lights Bar.
I went on the 'inner tour' of the hotel, discovering the rich history of this hotel that opened its doors in 1904, with many famous people having stayed here over the years, even Neil Armstrong.
How to get around
Taxis are really cheap and you can get your own driver to take you around for a really good rate.
When to go
Remember to check the season when traveling as you could get caught in the monsoons, but October was a great month to travel. It was warm and humid but very bearable.
Enjoy Bombay, the Hollywood of India!
