Santorini has to be one of those islands that is the most romantic in the world!
The scenery is so unique and is a feast for the eyes, from the starkness of the earth, to the breathless sunsets from the Caldera.
There is much to see and do and I wish I had spent a week exploring more, but here is what we did, and what an amazing adventure it was, especially as we traveled with friends whom we could enjoy it with.
How to get to Santorini
Ferries from Athens are plenty, so we took a ferry from Athens Port via Paros and Naxos, after spending a few days there, then to Santorini.
Santorini is located in the Cyclades and is under an hour's flight from Athens, so we took a flight back to Athens to catch a connecting flight back home. The airport at Santorini was busy as it was during July at the peak of summer holidays.
Where to stay
Brilliant white houses, carved into the side of cliffs, overlooking a crescent-shaped bay. World-famous sunsets with a glass of Santorini wine in hand.
This is exactly how it is on Santorini. And we did it, we stayed in a cave hotel on the Caldera.
Brilliant!
What to see and do
- Boat trip
There are many short boat trips to go on, and what a wonderful time we had, exploring and stopping for a most delicious seafood bbq lunch on the way.
The boat trip on a traditional boat that we chose was excellent!
Expect crowds of people if its peak season, but it is still a wonderful experience and you will take many happy memories home with you. Our trip stopped at a volcanic island where we walked on the blackened earth, as well as a stop for a swim in a cove where the water was bubbling warm.
- Exploring on Oia
Explore the cobbled streets and stopping for cold drink along the way, while overlooking the magnificent ocean way below, as the cruises ships pass by. Don't forget to watch the breathtaking sunset from the amazing viewpoints.
- Visit the Santorini Brewing Company
Visiting the micro brewery is a must, do a tasting, and get the T-shirt. It was one of the highlights for us!
- Dinner in Oia
Don't miss out on a dinner in Oia and sipping on a local wine. We were treated a visit to the cellar below the cafe where we viewed bottles dating back to 1967. Sadly we didn't drink it, but I hope someone will open it one day and enjoy it.
There are plenty of wine tours and tastings on the island too, which I think is a good option. It's best to pre-book as it is a popular choice with tourists.
- List for my next visit:
- Visit the local vineyards and wineries
- Hiking on the Caldera
- Kayak around the Caldera
- Eating more delicious food 🍷
